Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, Homeo Approach

DEFINITION:

It is defined as soreness and tenderness ,and weakness in the thumbs and first three fingers caused by pressure on the median nerve at the point where it goes though the carpal tunnel of the wrist.

This tunnel lies on the palm side of the wrist and is formed by the arch of the wrist bones behind and a strong band of fibrous tissue in front.

Blood vessels and tendons lie in this tunnel

Pressure in the tunnel increases if the tendons thicken or if its cavity is narrowed.

CAUSES:

• Stressful position of hand, arm and neck ,such as working at a desk, long -distance driving or waiting on tables

• Working for long hours with steady hand movement

• Sports that causes repetitive stress injuries which causes stress on the hand and wrist joint

• Injuries or post traumatic causes

• Rheumatoid arthritis and wrist osteoarthritis, leukaemia

• Thyroid problems, myxoedema, acromegaly, diabetes, and other systemic disorders

• Pregnancy

• Vitamin B6 deficiency

• Idiopathic is the most commonest cause

SYMPTOMS:

1. Pain and weakness in the thumb, first three fingers, palm, and wrist

2. Numbness and tingling sensation in the hand usually in the thumb and first three fingers

3. Pain often worse at the night or before sleep, usually after exertion at the work place

4. Shooting pain in the wrist ,fore arm, and sometimes extending to the shoulder, neck and chest.

5. Feeling of clumsiness in carrying out fine movements

6. Difficulty in clenching the fist and carrying small objects

7. Sometimes -dry skin and deterioration of finger nails

LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS:

X-ray and MRI Scan

Electromyograph

HOMOEOPATHIC APPROACH:

PULSATILLA:

Drawing ,tearing, pains in the joints with redness
The pains shift rapidly from one part to the other
Rheumatic pains are better by slow movement
Numbness around the elbow
Pains are worse in the morning and from heat
Useful remedy in the beginning of treatment of chronic case

RHUS TOX:

Hot painful swelling of the joint
Tearing and drawing pain
Limbs stiff, paralysed sensation
Trembling after exertion
Tingling of feet
Loss of power in fore arm and fingers
Crawling sensation in the tips of fingers
Tearing pains in tendons, ligaments and fascia

RUTA GRAVEOLANS:

Rheumatism of muscular and tendinous tissue
Complaints after traumatic injury
Limbs and body ache as if beaten ,joints as if sprained
Sore ,lame and bruised feeling
Sharp shooting and paralytic pains or sprained pains which quickly change place
Sore ,tender, and reed swelling of the joints

CALCAREA CARB:

Sharp sticking pains as if parts are sprained
Pains are shooting, cutting and tearing type some times confined to small spots
Pains are associated with cramps, contractions, stiffness and weakness all over the body
Weakness in the muscles aggaravated in the morning ,on beginning to walk, with stiffness and ascending stairs
sprained pain in right wrist worse on motion

CAUSTICUM:

It is generally useful in chronic ailments
Tearing and drawing type of pain in the muscular and fibrous tissue, with deformities
Restlessness in the night due to tearing type of pain
Unsteadiness in the muscles of the fore arm and hands
