The Derby: A Guide To The Runners And Riders

We've been looking at some of the top Derby contenders and it's one of the most open Derbies Epsom has seen in many many years. Aiden O'Brien has gone all out with 6 runners - although his record in this race is particularly bad. Godolphin only have one entry, and Frankie Dettori won't be too happy he has to ride it. So who will come out on top?

Sea The Stars

A classy horse with plenty of scope for progression after his win in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. The Derby comes just at the right time for him and this colt trained by John M Oxx should take to Epsom nicely. A worthy entry.

Fame and Glory

Unbeaten, and looking good. You just get the feeling that everything else entered by O'Brien is just there to set the pace for Fame and Glory, whose four wins have all been convincing enough. A good favourite.

Gan Amrhas

Third in the 2,000 Guineas, and that was his first outing of the year. There's more scope for progression for this horse that was noticed as a 2-year-old and now looks like he's going somewhere.

Black Bear Island

The Dante, run at York, often provides a clue as to who is going to win the Epsom Derby. Those who lose it don't go on to win the Derby. Ever. It's one of those facts that have proved themselves over a century. So it's good for Black Bear Island, and bad for...

Crowded House

The winter favourite for the Derby disappointed badly in the Dante. However, he cannot entirely be discounted -a winter favourite may only a winter favourite be, but he was indeed a worthy one after an impressive year as a juvenile.

Debussy

A 50/1 outsider, but one that has already won at Epsom, and has a bit of decent form behind him. He may lack the class of the other horses, which is why he's down at 50/1, but an each-way chance is on the cards.

Kite Wood

Another who lost out in the Dante, so another who won't win the Derby, if we stick to trends. Godolphin's only entry isn't good enough for this.

Rip Van Winkle

Money has been piling onto Rip Van Winkle over recent weeks, and we don't really know why. No form to speak of, although he was hampered in his last two outings... and it's unlikely he'll last the extra distance. This isn't the race for Rip Van Winkle.
