Giving Thanks While Decorating

Below are some Thanksgiving and Christmas Tips that I hope you'll find helpful. But first, I'd like to take a minute to thank you for your support and being a caring part of the homemaking decorators of this country, or wherever you're from. It doesn't matter what circumstances you find yourself in, there is always something for which to be grateful. I'm grateful for you, my family and friends, my home, safety and those that serve to protect us. I hope you'll pray this week for the men and women and families sacrificing their lives, no matter your politics.

I'm sure you're gearing up for turkey day, either cooking or traveling to someone else's home for the celebration. During this hectic time it's important to remember a few easy steps to make your home warm and inviting.

· Decorate your entry and door. Place a wreath on the door or display some gourds, pumpkins and corn at the front porch.

· Once inside, continue the harvest theme with more pumpkins (real or decor items) and leaves.

· Decorate with candles. Fill any low container with an odd number of candles at different heights and fill with cranberries. Pretty, simple and non-flammable!

· Get the kids involved in making some decorations and setting the table. Make paper chains in earth colors and hang on the back of chairs or some fun placemats.

· Don't forget the bedroom! Even if guests will only throw their coats in your room, it's great to add some holiday cheer. On a tray, place a teacup and saucer, an open book, a small swag of berries or a few ornaments. Or use a side table for the display.

· Lace the chandelier with berry garlands in holiday colors.

· Plan your buffet table/counter to have utensils, napkins and plates at the beginning. I also put more napkins at the end for convenience. Use upside-down bowls or different height stands to create a varied landscape.

· Curve some inexpensive fabric off the bolt between some of the higher dishes to create interest and softness. Add candles here as well, but make sure they are not within reaching (and spilling) distance.

· Take your presentation of the bird up a notch by lining the platter with colorful greens. This year, I'm using red chard and icicle radishes to add the color.

· If you're taking a gift, wrap it in the colors of the season and add a twig of berries or another bit of nature's beauty.

· Have Fun!

Don't eat too much and have patience with all the other drivers. Gobble, gobble. May your celebration this year be filled with thanksgiving for what you do have and filled with loved ones and friends close by.
