Lamentation for Anioma

There is no doubt that Anioma communities deserve socio-political and economic development from the nation the region has contributed so much in terms of natural and human resources to build. That this region, a region rich in mineral, food and human resources is lacking of development is not strange to political observers in Delta State because the reason this current situation pervades is well known. The Anioma region has been stagnantly abandoned to exist as left by Chief Dennis Osadebe, Obi (Senator) Nosike Ikpo and other champions of the region.

The name "Anioma" invokes the danger of state of oblivion; even then I am struggling to cogitate on what the name stands for as the situation currently stands. Does it mean ethnicity or just a name of region which must exist only on papers or in the minds of the people? The activities which should lead to the socio-political and economic revival of the boisterousness of what Anioma should stand for is lacking perhaps for lack of leadership, the implication is that while some of us are drifting towards the Igbo of south East others have decided to stand alone. Can any of these options rescue the Anioma people collectively? This is not only vexatious but also worrisome because Anioma has become a dumping ground for take off board of political office aspirants with strange agendas not favorable top the region. Above all the region has become marginalization and poverty stricken and has since remained so as both State and Federal Governments do not have the region in their present and future plans.

The most dangerous of it all is that the representatives of the entire region in government circles looked upon by the people of this region to reposition us are failing us gradually, yet speedily with nothing in Anioma to buttress their readiness to give in their best to the region for the best. No one of them appears fit to wear the shoes of the founding fathers of the region that planned to give us the best.

Anioma is so marginalized that the region cannot boast of portable water for consumption; many Adults in the region have never seen taps in the region since they were born. Efforts of State Government in developing the region is inconceivably questionable as every Governor of the State has concentrated his efforts on other ethnic groups in the State nicknamed "Core Deltans" to the detriment of the people of Anioma people. Can we ever see Julius Berger in any one of Anioma Community? The answer is no and still no. Can there ever exist duel roads in any one of Anioma communities apart of Asaba which is the State capital? The answer is no and still no.

The reactions of our Anioma leaders if ever there exist any are quietness in the face of extinction, striking poverty and lack of development. This "no shaking" approach is extremely condemnable as this leads to only a second fiddle politics which will do us no good.

It grieves me again and again each time I remember the large parcel of land in Ibusa now wastefully lying in the town which ex-Governor Ibrahim Kefas of Delta State commissioned what he named "Kefas Park" and my people went in full jubilation not detecting any ploy or further underdevelopment. Kefas Park housed a few number of iron seats and few number of seesaws maybe for our Adults and generally reflected a pitiable condition. Yet this commissioning ceremony was given a wide press coverage and advertorials.

Is this not embarrassing to Anioma people that today only two GSM masts exists in Kefas Park with the name Kefas Road still the order of the day? Abundant lands are lying in places like Ubulubu, Ejeme-Aniogo, Igbodo, Kwale, Obiaruku, Ute-Okpu etc but developments are lacking in all of these places. In Ossisa, people still travel afar to bath in streams while you may not expect to find electricity in this town in this century. No good roads either, only paths exist.

I make bold to state that until our Anioma leaders wake up from slumber, this very region will continue to record a lot of failures and stagnancy because no ethnicity in Nigeria will blow our trumpet for us and no amount of prayer will save us except we begin to make possible all the factors required to advance our course before it is too late.
