Create a Portable Home Office

If you live in a small home or studio apartment and need the option of working at home from time to time, consider assembling a portable workstation that can be wheeled away and stored when not in use.

Mobile wheeled workstations and cabinets are the practical answer to limited workspace. They range from a complete one piece workstation on wheels to a series of units that can be combined to create a self contained mobile office to suit your needs.

Sleek metal rolling workstations just large enough for a laptop computer are available in office supply stores. These can be wheeled into a closet or against the wall until needed. Tall cabinets with drop down shelves can be folded up and moved against the wall when not in use. Cube storage cabinets with a mixture of drawers and shelves used for filing and storage can be rolled under a desk or used as end tables.

A set of folding shelves can also be purchased at office supply stores. These shelves can hold files and folders as you are working. When finished just fold the shelves and put them into a closet until they are needed once again.

When purchasing items on wheels, be sure to test them out in the store. Make sure the wheels turn easily in all directions. Check the size of the wheels to insure they are sturdy enough to easily uphold the workstations. Wheel the pieces from place to place in the store and over various types of flooring, if that is available, to be sure they can be easily maneuvered.

Flooring in your portable home office room should be of a firm material such as tile or wood. Carpeting is very difficult to move wheels across. Area rugs should be placed so that they don't interfere with the traffic pattern. If the workstations are not easily available, you will be discouraged because of the hassle of bringing out your mobile office. Eventually this may deter you from making the best use of your portable office and interfere with your working from home.

It is important to plan your electrical outlets so that they are convenient to the placement of your portable equipment. For the sake of safety, cables should not be running across the room, even if you are the only person to be using the equipment.

Visit office supply, electronic and home improvement stores to see the great strides that have been made recently in home office equipment. If you think you don't have room for a home office, you may be pleasantly surprised.
