Better Off Without Better Nots

My two year old granddaughter is learning to talk and talk and talk. She is also learning to sing…a new song -- Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. I remember the impact that song had on me as a child. It would reappear each year along with the boxes of tree ornaments, wrapping paper, and fake evergreens. We'd sing it at school and hear it on the radio. Each year, my childish mind would begin to evaluate my behavior. The song was my primary text book for my first class on the subject of life's "better nots."

Early in our lives we learn we'd "better not" do this and "better not" do that or we'll be denied, punished and left out. It is important to teach children (and adults) that there are consequences for behavior. Accepting responsibility for our actions is an important piece of the social puzzle. On the other hand, living a life filled with "better nots" inhibits spontaneity and limits joy.

If you examine the words of Santa Clause Is Coming to Town, it is a scary song for children of all ages. It reinforces some regrettable concepts and sends questionable messages.

"You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout" = I'm suppose to hide my bad and sad feelings.

"He sees you when your sleeping, He knows when you're awake," = I am not safe anywhere.

"He knows if you've been bad or good" = Ouch, I can run, but I can't hide

"So be good for goodness sake" = too late. I'm sunk….

"He's making a list, checking it twice going to find out who's naughty or nice" - Oh Great, a full audit, "I'm with the IRS I'm here to help you."

I know the song is a classic, but I don't like the message. It runs counter to the real message of the season. Some things -- joy, love, acceptance, and grace are gifts to be received, not rewards to be earned.

I hope my granddaughter doesn't take the words too seriously. Good things are going to happen and Santa is going to come for goodness sake - crying and pouting or no crying and pouting. That is the Good News. There are no "better nots" about it. We're all better off without better nots.
