Luongo Does it Again
On Waiting for Stanley, a Canucks hockey blog, Zanstorm has an enthusiastic post-game review of Vancouver’s win over Dallas last night (3-2). In the first period, Dallas outshot Vancouver 11-6, but Luongo “kept us in it, keeping it scoreless after 1.” When Mason Raymond’s “solo effort broke the ice,” the Canucks didn't look back. “Dallas came close many times, but Luongod and the squad shut them down.” So much for “revenge” says Zonstorm.
One of the few downers was the “non-goal by Jaffray.” Our blogger was “disappointed because Pyatt clearly interfered with the Dallas defender to create room for Jaffray.” The “Swedish Touch line” is going and can only “translate into wins.” They’ve really got their game back. The bottom line, though, states the post, is that Luongo “was terrific again… His focus right now is unparalleled.”
Free Transit Doesn’t Mean People Will Stop Driving
Stephen Rees writes a response to a recent front page story in a local free paper that announced “a member of the premier’s influential climate-action team ‘advocating for free public transit.’” He first takes issue that it wasn’t really a story. “Naomi Devine is a student at UVic - and thinks that UPass should be available to everybody.” The article included no analysis, only noting that Maurine Karagianis, New Democratic Party MLA, had “concerns.” Second, he points out that free rides aren’t necessarily the answer.
Rees points out in his post that we should “look at how much Translink depends on fares.” Translink proposes to “hike fares next year and every other year thereafter,” although he questions how “short of cash for more transit” they can claim to be while “sitting on a pile of it.” He writes that if you make rides free, you have to replace the source of revenue. “While the feds and the province also are sitting on budget surpluses that does not mean they are even willing to… pay for transit operating costs.” In addition, we must look at what else we can do to “reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” Free fares doesn’t necessarily mean people will get out of their cars. “Better transit service, on the other hand, does.”
Public Affairs Bureau Office Kept Eye on Pre-Trial Attendance
Bill Tieleman, BC political reporter, reveals in his recent post that “a Public Affairs Bureau officer reported to the B.C. government” about the media presence, the attendance of NDP MLAs, and presence of a lawyer representing Gary Collins at the pre-trial hearings in the B.C. Legislature raid case. Stuart Chase’s May 14th attendance “became the topic of an entire question period in the B.C. Legislature,” during which Attorney-General Wally Oppal insisted Chase's duties were “to assist the media and public” and then refused to release Chases’ reports.
The 100-page Freedom of Information on Chase's reports shows that he told the government “who attended court and what questions media asked prosecutors and defence, as well as extensively detailing the case.” He wrote about who was in each day taking notes, keeping an eye out for 24 Hours. “The Canucks/GM Place ownership trial [is]… creating a media frenzy that's dividing attentions away from the Basi trial. Bill Tielman, [sic] even, has barely been in the court room,” reads Chase's April 30th report. The FOI request also had sections removed from the report, states Tieleman in his post.
Wax Poetic Series Goes Video
Steven R. Duncan, blogging at Commercial Drive Live, gives a plug to Wax Poetic on his recent post. Wax Poetic is a weekly radio show he’s been producing and co-hosting for the last 8 years. Diane LaLoge and local poet RC Weslowski also host. The most recent show features Doris Lavoie, who was a member of the Jubilation Singers “and longtime cohort of Diane’s.
“We have had, and continue to have, almost every local poet, musician and spoken word artist who's ever performed in Vancouver, including Bud Osborn, CR Avery, The Fugitives and Dal Richards, to name-drop but a few,” writes Duncan in his post. He will also be posting video clips on Commercial Drive Lice for most of the show. The show can be heard “live on 102.7 fm every Wednesday at 2pm PST, or you can listen to the show streaming from the internet” on the co-op radio’s website.
