Mastering Technical Downhills

Downhills are probably one of the most fun parts of mountain biking once you get good at them. One of the main things people have problems with when learning steep technical downhills is fear. If you employ some simple techniques the fear will be replaced with confidence and you should have no problem. I decided to make a list of techniques in order of importance.

1. Get Behind Your Seat - You need to get your body weight towards the rear of the bike. This literally means your butt should be over your rear tire and not your seat. If you have too much weight forward and you hit a root or a ledge your face will soon meet that root or ledge.

2. Leave the Front Brake Alone - This isn't true once you get more experience, but for now use your rear brake to control your speed on descents. Once again if you floor the front brake it will act just like that root and you will experience a face plant. The good things about face plants is after you've had one, you tend to not make the same mistake twice.

3. Pick a Line - There are several different ways to go through technical sections, hard ways and easy ways. It's a good idea to spot out the line before you go down and try to stick to it. If you get off the line don't worry, just stay behind your seat and tough it out. The more you practice this the less you will find yourself moving off the line. On extremely technical downhills there is no shame in stopping at the start of it, spotting a line, then going back to get a moving start.

If you master all of these, it will be hard to find a downhill you cant do.
