If you have only just decided to breed your dog, you have a lot to consider about the potential mate for your dog! Choosing whether to breed or not is easy, but choosing how to breed is not.
Some of the most important things to consider include:
The Breed Standard
If you are going to be breeding show class puppies, you really do need to choose a good stud dog. You will need to study what the breed standard is of your particular breed, if you do not already know. That way you will have a good idea of what to look for in a potential mate. For example, do they have the perfect head size? Do they look like a good example of the breed? Do they stand well? All of these things will need to be taken into account if you are breeding show dogs as people will pay good money for a show puppy, but they expect perfection in return.
Any Potential Health Problems
Looking out for any potential health problems in a potential mate is absolutely essential. It is perhaps the most important thing that you should do. Unfortunately, there are too many breeders who are simply out to breed their dogs and that means that, all too often, puppies are brought into the world with various health problems.
The health problems that your dog's potential mate could have will depend entirely on the breed. For example, a German shepherd can have problems with his hips, so a good stud dog would be vet checked and they would be hip scored to show that there is less chance of the puppies developing the problem later on in life.
It is not only the potential mate of your dog that will need checking over for its health, you should also make sure that your dog is a good example of the breed. Breeding can make you money, but it can also be expensive and one of those expenses includes getting the best stud dog that you can get.
