What ways are there of overcoming procrastination?

Often the main reason for people procrastinating is they feel that they absolutely have to do something. So when someone tells them self that they have do something, they are actually implying that they are being forced into doing it. Because the feel resentment and want to rebel then procrastination will kick in as a kind of defense mechanism in order to keep the pain away that they are feeling. So what ways are there of overcoming procrastination that a person can use?

One of the great ways of overcoming procrastination is by getting rid of the mental block and realizing that they do not have to do anything if they do not want to. Although there may be serious consequences relating to your decision it is your choice as to whether you do it or not. So for example if you decide to put off starting a new project that you feel you have to do you are realizing that you are choosing this of your own free will. Because of this procrastination becomes less likely on those tasks which you openly and freely choose to undertake and those that you don't.

Also one should be aware that they do not procrastinate in every part of their lives and this goes for those people who are chronic procrastinators.

Another way of dealing with procrastination is by thinking of the task in hand as small pieces rather than as one big whole project that needs to be completed. Often people who look at the task in hand and try to envision the completed task they will pretty much be assured of actually putting off doing it. This is because they start to feel overwhelmed by it and this painful feeling will make them delay actually carrying it out for as long as possible.

So a great way of overcoming procrastination is by instead of thinking about "How am I going to finish this project?" instead think about "What small step can I start on right now where this project is concerned?" By just simply starting a task without thinking about how you are going to finish it, you will soon find it has been finished.
