Just having a smoke alarm is definitely not enough, but that is a good first step!  The key to having smoke detectors is putting them in the right places.  Keep in mind that smoke is going to rise since it consists of particles in warm air. Therefore, all of your smoke detectors should be located a few inches below the ceiling on your walls.  You can also place them on the ceiling.

Make sure that you have a smoke detector for each floor in your house!  Not only is this important to make sure that your smoke detector will go off as soon as the fire starts, but this way, there will be a detector near enough for you to hear no matter where you are in the house.  The best place for a smoke detector is near your bedrooms.  You should also have a smoke detector in your kitchen, even if it is on the same floor as the sleeping area.

You should also have several fire extinguishers in your home, ideally you will have one near each smoke detector and you should always have one in your kitchen.  Make sure that you know which types of fire the extinguisher can be used on and what it is rated for.

You should also make sure that you have an escape plan already figured out for your home, including a meeting place outside of the house.  You should also make sure that there are at least two different ways to get out of every bedroom.  If you have a second or third story room, then you should keep a rope ladder with a good secure place to connect it so that you can climb out of the window if needed.

Make sure that you keep any lighters or matches far away from children, and do not allow them to play with the stove.  A leading cause of home fires occurs when small children play with a lighter or match.  You should also make sure that all flammable liquids, like gasoline or lighter fluid are kept in air-tight containers so that there are no gas fumes that could ignite.

Finally, you should also make your consumer choices based on which items are made out of materials that will not burn easily.
