The Districts Of Cancun

In 'The Great Gatsby' there are two sides to the town, West Egg and East Egg, the newly rich and the inherently rich. Cancun is divided into two regions that, although not as cleanly defined as those in Fitzgerald's iconic novel, are known as the city's Hotel Zone and downtown.

Cancun's Hotel Zone, or Zona Hotelera, features resorts and the city's premier activities, congregated and amassed as a grand exhibition of wild architecture, swimming pools, restaurants, and entertainment. While the Hotel Zone is especially known for trendy nightclubs, or discos, it's shopping scene is greatly eclipsed by Cancun's downtown.

Tourists to the city are in luck, however, as both regions are conveniently joined by Kukulcan Boulevard. The downtown area features the Yucatan's most eclectic collection of restaurants, bars, and Merados; Yaxchilan Avenue, in particular, is stretched for miles with cheap, authentic foods and a notorious example of unruly nightlife.

What defines the two regions are their distinct atmospheres. While Cancun's Hotel Zone is bathed in a chic, trendy, tourism-addled air; the downtown is traditionally Mexican, and resonates vibes of Spanish authenticity.

There are several smaller locations worth visiting on a trip to Cancun; those not as flamboyant, but unique and facilitative of the Yucatan experience. Visiting Isla Mujeres is a popular destination that directs visitors off the mainland and on to a sparsely decorated island. Getting there is as easy as inquiring about a boat ride from your Cancun hotel concierge, and Playa Mujeres, the island's most popular beach, is a site of breathtaking golf courses.
