While you're staying in Menorca, Son Bou offers some fantastic beaches, dining, and nightlife to give any Spanish holiday a certain sizzle. But one of the lesser-known activities to be found around Son Bou is a camping trip. With both conventional camping, and a number of plastic 'bungalow' tents on offer, Son Bou's camping site is popular with travellers and families alike as a place to relax and to enjoy the beach. Camping makes for a wonderful extra activity while in Son Bou, and is ideal for a one or two night adventure to spice up your regular villa holiday.
Activities On Offer
There are plenty of activities on offer just a short distance away from the campsite. Families can take advantage of the cycling, canoeing, surfing or waterskiing on offer, or there's always the option of time spent on the beach relaxing. For children there's a large play park nearby, and a 'children's theme park', consisting of a small city made up out of play houses - perfect for the families looking to escape the real bustle of Menorca! Son Bou's campsite also features several sporting activities for those with a lot of energy - football, basketball, and volleyball are some of the favourites available - just add children!
Fun In The Sun
For the people looking to make the most of a camping trip to Menorca, Son Bou is an ideal place to enjoy the environment. Using a classic canvas tent can make getting back to nature easy, but it often pays to do a little research beforehand on the weather that will be accompanying your holiday. Summer temperatures can be very high in some areas of Spain, but being close to nearby Son Bou beach means that the sea breeze can offset some of the heat. It's still wise to be mindful of the temperatures on a camping holiday, though, as the older or younger members of the family may be more susceptible to the heat than you realize.
A Good Night's Sleep...
After the sun sets, you'd be forgiven for thinking that any concerns about the environment or temperature would be put to bed. However, on a family camping holiday, the darkness of a night-time camp site can be off-putting for some children, especially if they're used to the lights and sounds of an evening in Menorca's Son Bou. A battery-powered lamp makes a great night-light, and making sure each family member has their own torch can go a long way towards providing some reassurance, especially on a first or second camping trip. Another fun idea for light is to bring along some glowsticks, both to provide illumination, and for the novelty value.
...But Don't Let The Bugs Bite!
In warmer weather, it's important to take insect repellent on holiday to Menorca. Son Bou's shops can provide a variety of protection, whether in aerosol or stick form. An alternative to artificial or chemical repellent comes in the form of citronella candles, which give off a fragrance which mosquitoes and other insects can't stand. They can provide an atmospheric light source for a camp site, as well as keeping pests at bay, but care must be taken to extinguish the candles before you go to sleep for the night. Mosquito nets can be very useful in keeping the tents free of annoying insects, allowing you to get a good night's sleep and - as in the best stories of camping holidays - wake up with the dawn.
After a few nights spent on a camping adventure the children may be reluctant to return to the luxury of your Son Bou villa; but give them one look at that inviting swimming pool, throw some seafood on the barbeque and it will be home sweet home once again!
