Where Did All This Water Come From
Once the carpet has been flooded, in other words submerged in water, it should be taken up and dried immediately. This may require the services of professional Water Damage Restoration Company. They will have the tools required to remove the water from the space and carpet. They will have the blowers and the dehumidifiers to remove the moisture in the air, sub floors, and walls. The Water Damage Restoration Company will also have experience dealing with the insurance adjuster if the carpet is beyond repair.
Now of course you may have been lucky to find just a small amount of moisture in the carpet, not a raging flood. As I have all ready mentioned as long as moisture is present mold and mildew will grow. When you find the musty odor coupled with moisture in the carpet, open the curtains and windows to get light on the carpet along with air flow circulated over the carpet by a fan. If you have a dehumidifier available it will help to remove moisture from the air and carpet.
Once the mildew has started to grow it will be necessary to clean or remove it. If the rug is small enough you can take it outside and expose the mildew to the direct rays of the sun, that will usually kill the mildew in a day or so. You can also use hydrogen peroxide mixed with water 1:5 add the sun and that will help speed up the death rate of the mildew.
Whatever the conditions were that caused the mildew to start growing. These conditions must be removed before putting the carpet back in place or the mildew spores will grow back.
