Your Home Business Is About Money
Why do people start a home business? They want to earn an income. I understand the desire for a flexible schedule. I understand the desire to work for yourself. I understand the desire to be in control of your own life. I understand not liking your boss or the way your boss does business. But when it comes right down to where the rubber meets the road, if you are going to start a home based business, you want it to be profitable to you.
When it comes to profit, it's all up to you. How much do you need as a profit? Remember, profit is your gross revenue LESS EXPENSES. The mistake most new business owners make is that they look at their cash receipts and rejoice. They don't remember to look at the back side of the equation. When they finally do and they see the cash dwindle, they quickly get discouraged. When they get discouraged, they give up.
There is one primary reason this happens. I call it the "Instant Gratification Letdown." We live in a society where we can pull up to a drive thru window and get our food. We pull up to a machine and get cash from our bank cards. We can start and stop our favorite TV shows when we want them. It's a society that breeds an attitude of instant gratification. We want it and we want it NOW! Unfortunately, this doesn't work when it comes to starting a business. If you want to start a home based business, you should expect to be in it for the long haul. You should expect to be patient. There is no such thing as instant gratification.
Most businesses are not really profitable on the first 6 to 12 months. The cash that comes in pays expenses and help you recoup your start up costs. This is why it is often a good idea to start part time and work it into a full time home based business. This allows you to maintain an income for your house while you get back your startup expenses back and begin to earn a profit.
