Music: The Chocolate of My Life!

There's little that's more fulfilling to me than seeing the light bulb go on when a child or an adult "gets it". Learning something new feels so good to all of us that, for me, the excitement of orchestrating that event, of watching it happen is the thrill of teaching anybody anything! Learning Junkies or not, "Getting It" is a high for all of us!

Music, in all its varied permutations, is the chocolate of my life. My urge to acquaint other people with understanding the underpinnings and the beauty--or not--is the drive that makes it impossible for me to not be a teacher.

Often someone will look at that different language--those little dots and lines and squiggles--and think it's beyond them to ever learn those complexities. However, that language can be presented to them in small bites which give simple forms, visual images, body movements and different ways of hearing. And all along the path of learning there's pleasure--the pleasure of doing and the pleasure of hearing.

Have you ever tried to listen to the bass line instead of the melody line?

Can you pick out a few bars of a rhythmic pattern, then remember them enough to clap them?

Do you know what makes a flute sound different from a violin?

Is it a mystery to you that sometimes when you clap (at a classical concert) no one else does?

Why is "elevator music" elevator music?

Becoming aware of elements such as these greatly enlarges your capacity for enjoying music. It really is more than just something to tap your foot to. It can become the chocolate of your life, too!
