Corporate ERP clients sometimes come up with the question, which can not be answered by one specific ERP reseller.  Very good example is this question: our corporation has about 100 legal entities, such as subsidiaries in Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, Russia, plus we have legal entities in the USA by product lines and services.  Currently we have Microsoft Dynamics GP – Great Plains architecture requires each legal entity to be Great Plains company and have separate Microsoft SQL Server database.  It is simply not feasible to run 100 SQL databases for just ERP/Accounting system.  How this is designed in other MRPs: Oracle Financials, Microsoft Dynamics AX, SAP Business One?  In this small article we are trying to orient you, IT specialist.

Microsoft Dynamics GP/Great Plains.  The architecture of Great Plains requires separate SQL Server database for the company/legal entity.  You can have intercompanies transactions, but you should do in this case intercompanies records in GL by hand or have Intercompanies Transactions module (or advanced intercompanies module from third party)

Oracle Financials/Applications/E-Business Suite.  Regarding Oracle Applications, it has an organization model that you can define organizations and the relationship among them. Using this model, you are able to define different structures to customize Oracle Applications according to your business need. The basics business needs are:

Use a single installation of Oracle Applications product to support any number of organization (just one database instance)

Support any number of legal entities within a single installation of Oracle Applications.

Secure access to data so that users can access only the information that is relevant to them

Sell products from a legal entity that uses one set of books and ship them from another legal entity using a different set of books.

Purchase products through one legal entity and receive them in another legal entity.

The list above shows the basics benefits of using multi-org on Oracle Applications.

Microsoft Dynamics AX/Navision Axapta.

Axapta can accommodate multiple companies within ONE DATABASE. This enables integrated reporting, intercompany transactions, consolidation and seamless user operation within multiple companies environment.

Master Records Sharing.  Axapta also pioneers with Master records sharing for multiple companies, such as GL Account, Customer, Vendor.

SAP Busines One.  SAP Business One, if it sits in Microsoft SQL Server – requires separate database for each company/legal entity
