The FA Cup: Will The Magic Return

I think without a doubt this season's FA Cup has been somewhat of a let down, with few matches catching the eye either for outstanding performances or unbelievable upsets.

As I write this column, the fourth round has all but been put to rest, with nearly all of the lower league sides having exited the competition. Although it's nice to see the Premiership's elite battling it out for the silverware, having a real underdog to root for is what the competition is all about.

I don't think England's top cup competition has been helped by a host of dull encounters being pulled out of the hat. Nobody can help this of course, but I do feel television bosses have made some poor selections in the matches they've chosen to screen.

Only yesterday, I switched on the television to watch Luton vs. Blackburn which despite having plenty of goals (as you'd expect from Blackburn of late) didn't really capture my imagination. Probably something to do with the empty seats and flat atmosphere I imagine.

Why oh why didn't somebody snap up the Wolves vs. West Brom game instead for example? A fierce Black Country rivalry between two teams both with the ability to progress would surely have provided better entertainment. Having had the benefit of being at the game I think it would have been an excellent advertisement for the competition. Not only was there a full house at Molineux, the game had everything you could ever want from a cup tie. Ok, Albion went on to win convincingly but not before contentious decisions, hard tackles and chances at both ends. I'll my hand up and say I'm a Wolves fan so perhaps there is some bias in my argument - but would you disagree with my point?

One saving grace for the good old FA Cup is the return of Wembley as the home of the final, which I truly believe will add a much needed injection of life back into the competition.

As for the winners of the competition, I said Arsenal at the start of it all and I'll keep the faith with the Gunners despite the fact they now face a tricky replay at the Reebok against Bolton.
