Success In Life - Are People Stopping You From Reaching Your Greatness?
John Gardner tells a story about Alexander the Great that highlights this issue. He said, 'When Alexander the Great visited Diogenes and asked whether he could do anything for the famed teacher, Diogenes replied: 'Only stand out of my light.' Perhaps some day we shall know how to heighten creativity. Until then, one of the best things we can do for creative men and women is to stand out of their light.'
If you understand this passage from Diogenes' perspective, there are times when you need to ask, tell, or just remove people from the path of your greatness. Of course, you want to try to do this in a way that won't hurt anyone but at times, it is inevitable that you will. However, the worst thing you can do is to just allow someone to 'stand in your light' when you have so much to do.
The key to this, of course, is to surround yourself with people who will enhance your ability to achieve your greatness. If you want success in life you will have to learn this principle, and the faster you learn it, the faster you will reach the success you are striving for in life.
As a side note, it is very important that you become aware of whether or not you are 'standing in someone else's light'. It's great to learn from those you admire but make sure that you are one of the people who are helping them, not distracting them in their own journey towards greatness.
