4 Personal Goal Setting Strategies to Developing an Action Plan
1) Set Specific Goals
Stating your goal in rather specific terms and conditions and you will better accept the journey needed to achieve the things you want in life. When setting goals, the process can be described as creating a map of your life. Similar to reading a road map to a desired vacation destination, you will twist and turn about a series of streets and highways in order to reach your intended location.
Setting lifetime goals is no different. As you set your goals, you will twist and turn throughout life to meet deadlines, achieve personal milestones and obtain knowledge that will bring you closer to the location in life you wish to enjoy. If you don't specify your goal, it makes it harder to pinpoint the twists and turns you need to make towards success and achievement. When you know what it takes to make your personal plans a reality, you will get there a lot faster, as well as effectively.
So, if you plan to buy a house in California, you simply cannot set the goal, " move to California" as a specific goal. There are so many components to this desire that you have to take notice of. Where in California do you want to live? How much will it cost? How much do you have to save before you can scan the real estate market? What is the cost of living in the state? Will you be able to find sufficient work there?
2) Backwards Thinking
Many individuals have found better success when they plan the achievement of their goals in a backwards manner. This is a great way to keep you on track towards moving forward. To get a better handle on this concept, let's say you wish to return to school and complete your bachelor's degree.
Would it be possible for you to start today? The answer is no. You have to apply to a school and get accepted before you can begin your studies. Would applying to a bachelor's program be possible today? Once again, the answer is no, unless you have your eyes set on one or more schools. Could you make a decision today? No, there should be an ample amount of research conducted before coming to a conclusion.
3) Tackle Fears, Doubts and Expectations Straight On
Your progress regarding the achievement of personal goals is helped through the realization of the fears you may face, as well as assessing your expectations. It is suggested to immediately tackle these issues so that you aren't slowed down by these factors.
Whether or not you have attempted to complete similar tasks and failed, you should meet all of your fears with confidence or these whispers of failure may stick in your head throughout your entire goal achieving process. You should cast your doubts aside and take the attitude that this time will be different and you are much stronger and wiser than before.
Additional habits to make when setting goals are to abandon your tendency to procrastinate (if this applies to you). You will get no where if you keep putting off the things that will lead to a successful future filled with personal achievements.
4) Make Plans You Can See
When you put your plan on paper, you can glance and zero-in on a physical reminder that can be posted anywhere and everywhere you can think of. Place your goals on the refrigerator, as your screensaver, on top of your desk or pasted on your bathroom mirror. Not only do these written plans serve as a daily reminder, but also creates a great motivating tool.
