L.E.O. - One I missed

"Alpacas Orgling" was released in 2006 while I was on hiatus, and so my stumbling across it this morning was purely by chance. The CD is a tribute to 70's pop icons Electric Light Orchestra, and in particular the writing and producing of Jeff Lynne - and it does a great job of paying homage while at the same time creating a pop gem of a recording that stands up extremely well on its own merits. With a clearly apparent movement towards sixties and early seventies pop sounds now being heard in a large amount of new releases, this CD fits in very nicely among the current mix.

Even though his appearance on the recording is limited to one song, hearing Andy Sturmer (Jellyfish) on anything after all this time is a real treat, and nearly makes the CD a must have for that reason alone. The CD was the brainchild of another master of pop melodies - Bleu (William James McCauley) who was a regular on the old abs play lists, and he's joined on this project not only by Sturmer but also Mike Voila of the Candy Butchers (and the lead voice from the movie "That Thing That You Do) and Tony Goddess of Papa Fritas - combining to make this a vocal ensemble that rivals any I've ever heard. The track "Goodbye Innocence" (the only one Sturmer's voice is heard on) has been added as a "new" song to our play list - this song is just gorgeous, and the George Harrison sounding style slide guitar, along with the ELO style vocals just make it too much fun not to hear often.
