You have to know what is normal in order to spot what is not normal. You should easily be able to see changes in the affection if you are used to a certain level of attention and it suddenly changes.
Why the Cheater Does It
A cheating partner will show excessive attention because they are feeling guilty or they are afraid of showing a lack of attention which would signal cheating. In their efforts to keep you in the dark they are actually showing you something is up.
The cheater is trying to hide what they are doing and make themselves feel better. So in reality the excessive attention that you may be liking is not for you at all, it is for them. It yet another selfish act related to cheating.
How to Handle It
Handling excessive attention can be hard. You do not want to completely cut them off. You also do not want to help them feel better about what they are doing. You have to treat the situation gently.
You do not want to let them see that you are onto their cheating ways. You have to play it cool. You may just have to go with the excessive attention. You could also tell them it is odd if you want them to know you know what is going on. Be careful about that approach because they may become defensive and use it as an excuse to storm out and be with their lover.
In the end your goal is to catch them so they have to admit they are cheating. Excessive attention is simple a sign but not proof enough. You should work to gather proof and then confront them.
