If you drive a vehicle, you're required to purchase auto insurance. It is illegal to drive without it so there's no way to get out of it. The good news is that there are hundreds of different insurance companies to choose from with many different types of coverage. If you go over all of your various options, you will be successful in finding coverage that you can afford.

Determine first just how much coverage you need. This greatly depends on the type of vehicle you drive. You'll most likely want full coverage on a brand new car and if you're paying monthly installments you might be required to. However, your ten year old fixer upper will do just fine with the minimum requirements. Depending on what state you live in, teen aged drivers may be required to have full coverage taken out on their vehicles as well.

Each state has slightly different minimum coverage laws so look up yours to get a good idea of what they are. Your past driving record will play a big factor in how much insurance will cost you. Past accidents and speeding tickets could mean that you pay more, while a clean driving record will mean you get to pay less.

Next, get a few quotes from the various insurance agents near you. You should be able to get a particular auto insurance quote by visiting the website of the company. Most car insurance websites will even offer competitive quotes from other companies as well.

You should also visit local car insurance agents in person when you have the time. There you will be able to establish a relationship with him or her and confirm the online quote you received as well. Often times, when you visit them in person, insurance representatives are able to match deals from competing businesses.

After you have received a few quotes, evaluate the various insurance companies that you are interested in. Check online customer reviews to see how consumers rank the company. You could also check how many complaints have been filed against them with the Better Business Bureau.

Asking your family members and friends about their car insurance is also a good idea. Be sure to ask about the company's reliability, customer service, and willingness to pay for accidents and repairs. Checking with local mechanics that deal with certain companies could also offer up valuable information. Such as how fast they are at paying for damages and repairs.

After you evaluate all of the possible choices, it's time to narrow down your choices. Base your decision on both the type of coverage you want and the kind you can afford. When you do finally choose one, be sure to read your potential contract very carefully. Some company's include clauses in theirs that allow them to deny paying for repairs at their own discretion. If there's a part of the contract you aren't comfortable with, ask them to change or remove it. If they won't, don't think twice about walking away.
