Turkey has become the number one holiday destination for British holidaymakers, overtaking Spain, which has been the most popular foreign holiday destination by far for many decades. Offering sun, sand, natural beauty and a relatively cheap cost of living, this exotic country has become holiday destination of choice for many.
For three or four generations mainland Spain and the Spanish islands have provided the number 1 foreign holiday spot for British holiday makers. The balmy climate, short flight time and lower cost of living have lured millions of tourists every year for their fortnight in the sun. However, things are changing!
A report by Co-Op travel in July 2008 showed that Turkey has now overtaken Spain as the country attracting the highest number of British holiday makers. The change in relative cost of living between 'Euro Zone' Europe and Turkey has almost certainly been the main contributory factor in this event. Whilst the often volatile New Turkish Lira was around the same value in November 2008 as in November 2007, the Pound had fallen against the Euro by around 20 percent.
Turkey has been attracting British holiday makers for a number of years, and as each year passes by the country has improved its level of customer service. New hotels and holiday complexes have been built to satisfy the growing demand, but the country still retains a 'different' culture and an exciting, exotic charm. From just about everywhere in Turkey you are never far away from an area of outstanding natural beauty or from an ancient area of archaeological interest. Towards the coast you are always close to a beautiful beach with crystal clear waters, and dramatic sunsets.
Turkey now offers a true alternative to the Spanish Costa's and Balearic islands. Turkey has a great climate, with over 300 sunny days a year and is under 4 hours away. Average holiday prices are often over 10% cheaper, and once there your money stretches a lot further.
Turkey is a place where East meets West and where the traditions and cultures of an ancient civilization mix with the excitement and trappings of modernity. Turkey is rapidly catching up with other more established holiday destination countries in terms of its quality of customer services and the Turkish people continue to charm their tourists with their welcoming and friendly attitude.
Whilst Turkey retains its own currency and the Euro is so strong, now is a great time to sample a modicum of what this enchanting country has to offer.
