This is not going to be pretty. A wonderful marriage has gone south and instead of getting out while there is still some semblance of love and respect something vicious is coming down the highway. The two of you are getting a divorce and as you see it only one person can win this war.
Your mindset is you have to win at any and all cost. You cannot fathom your ex coming out victorious in this conflict. When the thought crosses your mind you break out in hives and start to shake uncontrollably with rage. You have invested everything in making sure that outcome does not happen. If it does you will take this fight all the way to the Supreme Court and back if necessary.
What about a settlement? Not going to happen. Settlement is another word for concession and in your opinion that means defeat. You tell your divorce lawyer that a compromise of any sort is out of the question. When they inform you that certain type of settlements can go significantly in your favor you turn up the volume on them. No means no and that goes triple for any kind of settlement. Your lawyer is taken aback but agrees to follow your wishes.
Now it is time to see how another of your divorce tactics is working. See how many people in the mutual social circle you both shared will be willing to turn on your ex. Some are easy. They never liked your spouse so that's not a problem. Others will take a little more convincing so you work on them with true and exaggerated stories of your spouse's shortcomings. Others are on your spouse's side so they are on your enemy's list. Still more than a few want no parts of this and do their best to maintain their distance. They too wind up on yours enemy's list.
You need just one more component. And it is vital that you secure their loyalty. Both you and your ex have been working steadily to win your children over and from where you sit they need to be pushed some more to finally get them on your side.
This divorce battle is going to be one for the ages. But the verdict has already been rendered. Since you are prepared to go to war and destroy that person whom you once promised to cherish, you have already lost. The only thing left is how much you are willing to destroy yourself in the process.
