You finally got that coveted promotion. The problem is, it is located in a new facility in another area of the state. Now you must relocate your family to a new home in the near future. And you already know moving can be a nerve racking and expensive undertaking. Planning ahead and organizing your belongings can save you time and money. When you know you are going to move is the time to begin thinking about your self storage needs as well.

Several months before your move, go through all your belongings and get rid of things you do not use or no longer want. If you have excess clothing, kitchen utensils you never use, small appliances and other household goods you can donate them or sell them at a yard sale. Keeping all your unwanted items in self storage until just before your yard sale or prior to moving date will keep them out of the way while you continue sorting and organizing. The less you have to deal with on moving day will make things go smoother.

Get an estimate from the facility. Self storage charges can vary among the different facilities and for different types. One option is mobile units. These can be delivered to your residence where you can load the units as you need. Then they are transported back to the facility until you need the stuff.

Another option is having a moving company pack your things and move them into self storage closer to your new residence.

Plan ahead though. The moving industry has a busy season and the demand for moving equipment, vans and personnel can be scarce during peak times. Try to plan your move during the winter or fall before the end of the month or year and holidays.

Prepare your belongings before storing them. There are a few tips that can help safeguard your clothes and other stuff before they are packed away.

Store clothes that are clean. Pests are less likely to invite themselves into your container if your clothing is clean.

Do not over pack your containers. Leave room for clothes to breathe.

Dry clothes and belongings prevent mold and mildew from growing inside and on your container.

Add moth balls as a pest repellant to any fabric stored. Put them in old socks so they do not touch fabric.

Seal all your boxes to prevent accidental damage from spills. Wrap your wood furniture with old blankets to protect against scratches.

If you will be storing any refrigerators or freezers prior to your move, be sure they are dry and stored with the doors ajar. Any stoves and cooking equipment should also be clean before they are stored.

Label your containers with what the box contains, and which room it belongs in. Do not overload the box.

Your belongings are valuable to you, whether you are moving them or storing them for future donations. Consider getting extra insurance coverage on your belongings while they are being stored and moved.

The family has begun organizing and sorting their belongings. They decide to rent self storage at their current location while they decide what to keep and what should be sold or donated. They will sell the items and make donations when moving time gets closer. Renting the unit allows them to take their time in organizing what they really need and want to move.
