Raising chickens is quickly becoming a popular activity even in major urban areas. A book released last year called ‘City Chicks' talked about the urban movement to keeping hens for egg laying purposes. Indeed, there are many good reasons to raise chickens. The activity is no longer reserved for the rural dweller.

One main reason people choose to raise their own chickens is to save money. Raising chickens can be a very cost effective activity. Although it varies significantly depending on breed, an average chicken will lay one egg nearly every day. Chickens are affordable to maintain. Free-range chickens require no food since they consume insects and greens to sustain themselves. Another way in which raising chickens can be cost effective is by hatching chicks and selling them to friends interested in starting their own chicken farms.

Fresh eggs from your own backyard chicken farm are more nutritious and tastier than store bought eggs. Eggs from backyard chickens have higher vitamin content and more Omega-3 fatty acids. Plus, they taste so much better. Store bought eggs are often several days if not weeks old by the time they reach your plate. Eggs from your own chicken farm can be consumed within a matter of minutes. Most people don't even realize how good eggs can be!

Chicken droppings make great fertilizer for plants and flowers. Be careful though: a few droppings go a long way; chicken droppings are very potent as a fertilizer. Your backyard chickens can basically pay for themselves if you sell their droppings as fertilizer.

Chickens also make fun pets. Many people do not realize it, but chickens are fun, loving, sociable creatures. They like to be pet and can even be trained to do tricks. Having your own chicken farm can be a great conversation starter. At first, people will be unlikely to believe you, but once they realize you're not joking, they'll love checking out your chicken coop and enjoying some fresh eggs - should you be kind enough to share!
