Don't Be a Victim: A Quick Guide to Self Defense Devices

Even if you feel completely safe it is important to be prepared, but if you are like me you would prefer weapons that are non-lethal. There are many effective and humane self-defense items now on the market that can help protect you from a violent attack from a criminal or even an animal. You may be surprise to know that according to the Center of Disease Control there are approximately 4.7 million dog attacks each year in the United States. More alarming according to THE National Center for Victims of Crime, every 7 seconds one person falls victim to a physical attack in the US.

So what are some options in the area of non-lethal self defense weapons:

1) Pepper Spray-Pepper spray (oleoresin capsicum or OC) like its name is created from oily resins found in cayenne and other peppers. The benefit of this method is that it can be used at a distance from the attacker and once sprayed will cause a burning feeling to the skin, cause the eyes to slam shut and make it hard to breathe.

2) Stun Gun-A stun gun is a hand held weapon that must be used at close range and works by essentially shocking the assailant with high voltage electricity. The effects of the shock includes intense pain and the temporary loss of muscle use. Although being stunned hurts there is no long term effects or permanent injury.

3) Personal Alarm-This method is the most humane and possibly least effective device for personal protection. Upon being approached or attacked the alarm can be set off to alert others to help and hopefully scare away the assailant. This may not however be effective in all cases.

These are just some great options available to protect you and your family, and are all great alternatives to hand guns and knives. Anyone who has fallen victim to crime knows the devastating toll it can take, which makes it so important that you are prepared to protect yourself. With that said, whatever method you choose, the ultimate hope is that you never need to use it.
