The Benefit Of Relegation For Charlton Athletic

I really think that if Charlton go down this season, then it will benefit them and their fans greatly - at least in the short term.

I mean, they've been in the Premiership for a number of years and maintained their status through sheer merit with some fantastic runs of form. However, they've always managed to finish somewhere just below mid-table. Despite the odd great performance and fine result, that must be somewhat boring for the fans down at the Valley.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that if they were to go down, then perhaps they would consolidate and adjust quickly and find themselves back in the big time. I also think this break would do them the footballing world of good. Sure, teams that stay in the Premiership benefit from greater financial security and have the ability to prosper to their maximum ability - but Charlton are a team that never really gamble to get to the next level.

Therefore, a season (or two) down in the Championship might get the confidence going, allow a manager to build another team and form a better assault on the Premiership in years to come.

I might well be wrong, and if Charlton (like so many others before them) get relegated and simply stagnate in the lower leagues then it would certainly be a horrible prediction to make. But I'll put my neck on the line and say right here and now that if they do go down this season (which I think they will) then in a year or two they'll be back in the top division and stronger for it.
