Although much attention has been focused on the asbestos that is prevalent in building components, auto parts and other products, asbestos that is naturally present in the environment is also dangerous in many settings throughout the U.S. and the world.

NOA: Naturally Occurring Asbestos Naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) is a relatively recent focus of study and debate. The term "NOA" usually refers to the silicate minerals serpentine and amphibole that are present naturally in rock. If asbestos deposits in the ground or in rock - the most common sources of NOA - are left undisturbed, they may not present a significant health hazard.

When NOA Is Disturbed It is when NOA deposits are disturbed that they may give off the carcinogenic fibers that initiate asbestos diseases such as mesothelioma cancer, asbestosis and lung cancer. Among the many ways that a deposit of NOA may be disturbed are:

§ Mining § Quarrying § Evacuation for the construction of a building § Farming § Landscaping § Gardening § Shoveling or raking gravel that contains asbestos § Recreational activities that disturb the soil - e.g., ATVs, bicycles, jogging

Regarding the last item, recreational activities, it is known that the trailing members of a group of runners, cyclists or vehicle riders are exposed to much higher levels of toxins in the soil compared to the leaders, and that children may suffer from the asbestos exposure more so than adults.

Naturally Occurring Asbestos in Your Community If a community has confirmed that one or more naturally occurring asbestos deposits are present within its confines, several issues arise, including:

§ Whether to remove the NOA, and how to do so § How to reconcile the differing interests of residents, scientific experts, commercial interests, government agencies, etc. § Possible reduction in property values § Health concerns § Employment changes

Harmful Affects of Asbestos Exposure While naturally occurring asbestos mines are not harmful, once disturbed, they become extremely toxic and can lead to the development of asbestos cancers. Asbestos is made up of strands of durable fibers that if broken down, separate, creating a form of dust that can be easily swallowed. If swallowed, the fibers can become embedded in the lungs and over time create irritation, and eventually lead to the development of fatal diseases such as asbestos cancer.
