Pepper Spray and What They Didn't Tell You
There is much to be said for all the non lethal self defense products on the market today steel batons, stun guns, tasers, pepper sprays, et. al. They all have their strong points. They all work, they are generally very inexpensive and they are all legal.
Please note that some cities and states have restrictions on stun guns, pepper sprays and tasers. So check with your local police department to be sure you are within the law or check pepper spray laws.
Chemical Weapons have been used for thousands of years from the time the Chinese would fill bags with pepper and spices to throw at their enemies. In 1864 Germans used tear gas for the first time. World War 1 saw the first real use of chemical agents to harass and kill the enemy.
Law enforcement used tear gas for crowd and riot control after WWII. The FBI did three years of testing on OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) and found it suitable for Special Agents' and SWAT use.
Pepper Spray has been found to be especially effective against animals like bears, mountain lions, and dogs. Did you know the U.S. Postal Service has all of its carriers carry pepper spray? I know my carrier Mike does and uses it too.
Pepper spay has an excellent safety record but since it is a weapon it is strongly recommended that some training take place before use.
Defensive sprays are particularly great in women's self defense.
Pepper spray today uses Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) which comes from cayenne pepper. Defensive pepper sprays are measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU's) a common measure of a products' "hotness". A jalapeno pepper has an SHU of 5000, a habanero pepper 300,000 and a typical pepper spray will be in the 2 million SHU range.
It will causes the attacker to have shortness of breathe, have temporary blindness due to excessive tearing and the eyes actually shutting down, coughing and choking. It is very nasty stuff.
The effects of pepper spray can last as long as 30-45 minutes.
Pepper Spray is nasty stuff. It is perfect for home, auto, RV's, outdoor or business use. It could be your first and last line of defense in an assault situation.
Please Note that even though pepper spray is legal in all 50 states, some states and cities have restrictions. Check with your local police department for pepper spray laws and pepper spray use. Literally thousands of police departments carry and use pepper spray. WHY WOULDN'T YOU?
