Living in South Florida

As I sit here, this morning, trying to wake up enough to take Bubba for his daily trek, Kitty comes by and demands immediate attention. She assumes whenever I am sitting down, it is for the express purpose of petting her. Most of the time, she gets my attention either by standing on the keyboard or in front of the monitor.

Christmas will soon be here and I am mentally going over last minute shopping lists. Bubba is now impatiently telling me to get up and get dressed. He wants to go meet his friends. The route he takes will determine which of his friends he wants to say hello to. It does not matter to me. I just enjoy looking at all the homes decorated with lights, wreaths, garlands, etc. At night, almost every street is lit with Christmas lights. It is a very pretty sight to see. I just wonder why the spirit of this time of year cannot continue past the first week of January.

I guess it is sort of a let down. After the holidays, there is nothing to look forward to until the spring thaw. Of course, down here, we do not have a spring thaw. We just have two seasons - hot and monsoon. We do have a few advantages though. We do not have heating bills - even if our electric bills for running air conditioning might be equal to what northerners have to pay to keep warm.

We do not have snow or ice, so our highways are safer to drive, most of the time. There are more unlicensed, uninsured drivers down here than anywhere else in the county. Anyone can buy a car, all they need is the cash. Driver licenses and proof of insurance are only required by legitimate car dealerships.

I am reminded of my uncle. Many years ago, he walked into a car dealership and bought a new car. When he got into it, he asked the salesman - ok now, how do you drive. The salesman showed him which was the brake and the gas, then wished him luck. We were lucky, he did not hit anyone and finally did learn to drive.

It is time to take Bubba out. The sun is peeking over the horizon. I see, by the dancing flowers, there is probably a warm breeze wafting through. It is time to start the day.
