There are a few things to consider when signing an entertainment contract. You will need to be alert or you will find yourself bound up in an unfavorable agreement for quite some time. This industry is a large one and has its share of crooks who will readily take advantage of someone who is new to the game. The best course of action is to hire a lawyer who can help you. Here are some steps to help you choose the lawyer that is right for you.

1.    Search for an attorney: Look up entertainment lawyers or attorneys in Google. You will find several websites with some interesting and useful information. Check out the websites carefully and pay attention to details.  Note down some names and get ready to dig deeper.

2.    Check their expertise: They should specialize in these types of contracts, be aware of the ins and outs of the agreement, and be well familiar with this typical law. Reading through the articles on their website will give you a good indication on their expertise. Be careful to note all the information that you find and make small thumbnail sketches of your selected attorneys.

3.    Check out testimonials and previous work: On any good website you will find testimonials. These are valuable insights into who the lawyer has worked for and what they have been involved in.

4.    Rapport-need to get on well with them: Whenever you hire a lawyer for entertainment contracts you should always make initial contact by phone. This will answer immediate questions and give you an indication of how they will respond. A free initial consultation is always good because then you will be able to judge whether you will be able to work with them. Hiring one of these lawyers will be part of your long term goals for your music career, so you do not want to make any mistakes. This agreement may be your first but with a good lawyer on your side you can look forward to many more. This means that you will be looking for a long term business relationship with your attorney.

5.    Check your budget: Before you sign any entertainment contracts you will need to check your budget. You do not want to hire cheap inferior lawyers but at the same time you will need to be sure that you can afford to pay your lawyer. As mentioned you want to hire your lawyer as a long term arrangement and you will want to be sure that money is not an obstacle.
