A major factor to consider is the appliances. It is usually a good design to incorporate the appliances into the work triangle. Decide if there is a specific appliance that you would like to add, such as a dishwasher or microwave over the stove.

What about different sized cabinets, such as taller wall cabinets, pantry cabinets or maybe some accessories inside of the cabinets. Maybe the wall cabinets that you now have are too short, and you would like the new cabinets to reach the ceiling.

Is there a possibility of opening up the kitchen to other rooms of your house. This will create the appearance of a larger kitchen if you are limited on space.

Something else that should be discussed is the countertops. Make sure you do your research on the different types of tops, because it will make a huge difference in cost as well as durability. Granite will scratch easily and the abuse that it could take with small children will leave you frustrated.

What about the flooring for the new kitchen? Something else that should be considered if you are replacing the old floor is to make sure that the new floor is installed before you install the cabinets. Your kitchen designer should be made aware of the type of flooring that you have chosen so he or she can design the kitchen around the flooring.

Custom cabinets are expensive, but they are also something that can make the kitchen all the more unique to your home. Maybe a custom island cabinet that will stand out and be a feature piece of the room. By adding different height cabinets will make the room stand out. Stain colors and door styles are one of the most important aspects of the kitchen design that you will need to decide on before you get really serious about the remodel.
