Have an electrical assess the situation if you find that your lights tend to automatically dim when the air conditioning, computer or blow dryer are started.

3 The wires of a house have a specific life of a few years. So if your wiring is more than twenty years old and doesn't look good, it should be checked by an electrician. Even if you find black rubber in your electrical box or wires that crumble or are not in good shape, its better to call in a professional. Even if your electrician declares that the wiring is safe and needn't be replaced, at least you know your wires are safe to use.

These electrical situations and major remodeling works should be attended by a professional and not be attempted by inexperienced people. It will only lead to further damage of the affected regions and may cause harm to you. However while hiring your electrician, make sure he has the experience and is capable to handle the job you call him for.
