Choosing the Right Birthday Gifts for Young Twins

If you have young twins in your family, choosing the right birthday gifts can be a potential nightmare. By following the advice given here, you might just get through birthday time in one piece.

The main thing to remember is that twins have quite a complex existence. They have an awareness of their individuality, but at the same time have always had to share everything with another person - the womb, meals, bath time, attention from parents and grandparents and perhaps have to share the same bedroom. In many cases, they also hear themselves referred to as a singular entity ("the twins", "girls", "boys" or simply "you two"). Because of this you may find one or other twin either desperately expressing him or her self as being an individual, or getting very upset that they have not received exactly the same as their sibling.

So, on to what to buy them...

The key to successfully buying a birthday gift for twins is getting the balance right of giving them each what they see as something "just for them", whilst retaining an impression that they are getting the same as their brother or sister. If the twins you are buying for are both different sexes, it can be as simple as buying a Barbie doll for the girl and a GI Joe doll for the boy (different, but the same - get it?).

Another idea would be to look for toys, games or bikes that are available in different colors (and, of course, make sure you know each twin well enough to be aware of their favorite color - don't buy them pink roller skates if their favorite color is blue!). Similarly, you could buy books written by the same author, which the children can then happily exchange between themselves once they have read their own. In certain circumstances, you can get away with buying a single shared gift, but this can cause issues on the "individuality" side of the twin's personality. If possible, always give a small gift to each twin to accompany the shared gift. Also bear in mind that the shared gift should be large enough in size for both twins to open simultaneously.

Once twins reach about 9 or 10 years old, buying birthday gifts for them becomes much easier, as they are less inclined to notice how different or similar their gift is to their brother or sister's. Until that time, keep these ideas in mind and you will not go far wrong.
