Trying to lose abdominal fat around the midsection does not have to be a frustrating and slow process. However for many people, this is the case.

One of the main problems is that there are a lot of different sources of information out there, and each claims to have the best way to lose abdominal fat. Most of these claims only focus on one thing, and it is usually diet or exercise.

Your about to find out why this is a huge mistake and could be ruining your results.

Let's talk about the 5 most common mistakes people make when they are trying to lose abdominal fat.

1. They only focus on ONE thing.

They try to do it just by diet, just by cardio, or just by doing an insane amount of crunches. Think about it like this. You gained abdominal fat by not eating the right foods and not getting enough physical activity. This combination resulted in the gain of body fat. If you want to lose abdominal fat permanently, you have to take the same multi variable approach that includes diet, cardio, and strength training. The right combination of these 3 things synergistically will result in being able to lose abdominal fat permanently.

2. They avoid strength training at all cost.

What is the most common myth about strength training? It gets you big and bulky. I want to tell you that this is simply not true! If you train and eat like a bodybuilder, you may get big muscles if you have the right genetics. If you are like the other 98% of the population, getting big bulky muscles simply cannot physiologically happen. Strength training adds lean muscle mass to your body that will help you lose abdominal fat. Muscle burns calories for energy just like cars burn gas. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn while being active and at rest. This will help you to lose abdominal fat and build a strong body at the same time.

3. They try to do an insane amount of ab exercises everyday.

This goes back to the myth of "spot reduction." Spot reduction means that you try to lose fat in a certain area by working the muscle underneath. Unfortunately, you cannot lose fat around the mid section by doing lots of crunches. When you lose abdominal fat, you will lose it in the same proportion all around your core. Think about it like this. Have you ever seen someone with chiseled six pack abs and flabby love handles? No! People who have excess fat and people who have low body fat have it in the same proportion all over their body. So remember, doing lots of crunches is not the best way to lose abdominal fat.

4. They do long, boring cardio routines.

Have you ever tried to lose fat by getting on a bike, treadmill, or elliptical for 30-60 minutes at the same speed? If so then your efforts to lose fat have been struggling. Doing cardio at the same speed does burn calories, but it does not increase your metabolism. If you want to increase your metabolism through cardio, try interval training. You basically warm up, then go at a slow speed for 2 minutes and then fast for 30 seconds-1 minute. Then, repeat this process again 3-6 times. By working at a higher intensity, you are increasing your resting and active metabolism. This will help speed up the process when trying to lose abdominal fat.

5. They try to go on extreme diets.

I have heard of people trying to eat 1 meal a day, doing the all liquid diet, and even going as far as not eating! You don't have to cut back your calories to 1000 per day in order to lose abdominal fat! You just have to avoid trans fats and bad carbs, eat 4-6 small meals per day, and create an overall caloric deficit. If you try to starve yourself or use extreme diets, I guarantee you will end up gaining weight in the end. Going on some kind of extreme diet won't help you lose abdominal fat permanently.

If you avoid these common mistakes when trying to lose fat, you should start to see better results in no time. Remember, the key is increasing your metabolism with interval training and strength training, as well as doing the right things with your diet. If you do these things right, you should be able to lose abdominal fat and see a difference in a little as a few weeks!
