"Ouch! Please don't bump my name around!"

Every so often I run my own name on search engines. I want to see
what articles pop up (am I posted on a porn site?) and how they
look on other people's websites. And I have to admit it's a great
ego boost...

EXCEPT when I come across situations like these:

(a) My favorite article turns up on a very popular mailing
list. "This piece was originally submitted by Coach X, a business
coach," reads the caption. I am not Coach X.

Most people err on the side of caution. Some editors email me
even when the guidelines clearly specify reprint rights.
Organizational managers email to ask if they can discuss my
article at a staff meeting. No reason to query in either case --
but it's appreciated.

Frankly, I cannot imagine why any coach would send around someone
else's articles. You'll gain maximum mileage from sharing your
own unique, original, brilliant thoughts. Why market someone
else's personality?

(b) I attended Coach Y's free one-hour teleclass on marketing. I
followed up with a brief call to the Coach Y, who was very
competent. I kept her name for future reference.

One day I received an email ad, promoting Coach Y's low-cost live
three-hour workshop. Listed in the testimonials was my very own
name, with a note, "Best class I've attended on the subject!"

Now, I probably did send some feedback along those lines. Given
some classes I've attended, it wouldn't take much to be "best."
But I never paid a dime to Coach Y and I never attended the
workshop she was promoting. Her testimonial was misleading.
Needless to say, I won't be recommending Coach Y to anyone in the
near or distant future.

And sometimes you get a nice surprise...

One site lists a group of twenty-nine prolific ezine authors.
"Chances are you recognize these names," wrote the webmaster,
"and you know what they do." Yes, there I was -- honored to be
included in such august company, without paying a dime. No
complaints -- but I wish I'd been notified. I'd love to use that
site as a testimonial for my own promote-yourself-with-writing
workshops. With the webmaster's permission, of course!
