Betting On Horses is a Mugs Game...But Only if You Are a Mug!

So what constitutes a mug when it comes to horse racing betting?

Well, in the eyes of a professional, (and in the eyes of the bookies) it would be...

1) Someone who bets more than they can comfortably afford to lose.

2) Someone who chases their losses.

3) Someone who bets on a longshot just because they NEED a longshot to win.

4) Someone who bets every day just for the sake of having a bet.

5) Someone who bets without the right information.

There are obviously more, but let's look at those five reasons in a little more detail.

Betting On Horses - How To Recognise A Mug Punter!

1) Someone who bets more than they can comfortably afford to lose.

At the racetrack you can always tell the person who has bet more than they can comfortably

afford to lose. With anxiety written across their faces, they are the one's who rant and rave

about how the game is 'fixed', how the jockey rode a terrible race, how the horse was useless

(why did they back it then?) etc.

2) Someone who chases their losses.

This is the fastest rode to the poor house. This sort of punter is a bookies delight. They will bet larger and larger sums of money in the hope of winning back their losses. They will

convince themselves that a losing run has to come to an end soon, so it might as well be today.

And they bet in every race on the card, chasing bigger and bigger losses each time.

3) Someone who bets on a longshot just because they NEED a longshot to win.

This is a similar sort of character to the last mentioned. Logic and common sense goes out of

the window and they convince themselves that the 10/1 shot in the race will be the winner.

Invariably they do so because a 10/1 shot is exactly what they need to pull them out of the

hole that their own poor betting practices have dug for them.

4) Someone who bets every day just for the sake of having a bet.

Betting on horses is a daily obsession for this type of punter. Another bookies delight! Just

because they like to have a bet, this sort of punter will bet every day, whether there is

anything worth betting on or not.

5) Someone who bets without the right information.

Again, the bookies love these sort of gamblers. Little more than pin stickers, they think they

know a bit about studying form, but a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!

So, Betting On Horses - Is it a mugs game? Only if you're a mug!
