Website owners get so excited about getting traffic to their site they don't know what to do once it gets there. There are three major mistakes website owners make with their landing pages. These mistakes cause visitors to leave quickly without converting to a sale.

Mistake #1: Not having custom landing pages for every search term that visitors use to find your site.

When designing a marketing plan remember to take a step back and look at the whole picture. The search begins with a specific search term that your visitor typed in a search engine. Your customer will be are looking for confirmation that they have "landed" in the right spot after they click on a link. The decision to stay on a site is made within a fraction of a second so make that first impression count.

There are three easy ways make a good first impression. Number one, include a picture of the search term the visitor typed to find you. Number two, have the title of the page be the exact search term they used. Lastly, your search term should be in the opening paragraphs and other text on your page. By following these guidelines your site will increase conversions and have a lower bounce rate (bounce rate is when a visitor only sees one page of a website and leaves immediately).

These guidelines will help with pay per click traffic and SEO. The investment of making multiple pages is well worth it. Whatever you do don't send all your traffic to your homepage. Remember that search engine index pages not websites so forget about having all your keyterms on every page.

Mistake #2: Mixing Adsense with a site that is trying to sell products.

A common reason people put Adsense on their site is to capitalize on traffic that doesn't convert. They reason that if someone is going to leave a page you might as well make some money off them. If this theory was true Adsense would be a great way of offsetting the cost of advertising.

The truth is having Adsense is one of the worst things you could do on an ecommerce website. Not only does it display competitors' ads it also reflects poorly on your site as a whole. As a rule of thumb only include Adsense ads on information websites (i.e. blogs, article, or instructional sites).

Mistake #3: Having too many options and links to choose from.

A landing page that has every possible distraction on it doesn't convert very well. Trying to communicate that your company is the best and that you also have all these other products actually hurts your sales. Each page should only have one goal. If one single page has multiple goals your conversions will suffer. As a rule, remove all unrelated text, links, images, and other things that get in the way of the reason they are there. Point them on a path towards the end goal.

By using these three simple rules of thumbs your conversion rate will increase. When that happens your sales will increase and so will your bottom line.
