Environment Articles - There Is No Such Thing As Plastic Eco Friendly Water Bottles

The idea of plastic eco friendly water bottles is something of an oxymoron.  Plastics eventually pollute the environment.  They are not bio-degradable.  Making them requires the use of petrochemicals and more water than the bottle will hold.

Transportation uses up more of our non-sustainable resources, including oil and gasoline.  It uses up freshwater to and our freshwater supplies are not unlimited.  Already, in coastal areas around the world, saltwater is intruding into what were once underground freshwater aquifers.

We have the ability to reduce the sodium or salt content of freshwater, but the taste is unpleasant and the process is costly.  Scientists estimate that within the next 20 years there will be significant freshwater shortages.  Those countries that will suffer the most are, of course, the poorest.

If you live in the US, the UK, Canada or another of the wealthier nations, you can do your part to help the poverty stricken countries, now.  By refusing to buy bottled beverages, by installing your own home purifier, if necessary and by travelling with truly eco friendly water bottles, you can help reduce the impact that your family has on the planet's freshwater supplies.

If you live in an area serviced by a public treatment facility, you need a home purifier.  The chlorine and other chemicals used for disinfection protect your health in some ways, but they also have a negative effect on your long-term health.

Byproducts released during the disinfection process, primarily THMs, although there are others, increase the individual's risk of bladder and colon cancer.  Those two types are proven to be more common among people with chlorinated water.  But, the chemicals probably contribute to other types of the disease, as well.  The best home purifiers remove chlorine and THMs.  So, they may also help reduce your risk of cancer.

Truly eco friendly water bottles are those that can be reused again and again.  They do not contain chemicals like BPA or phthalates, which are also believed to contribute to a person's cancer risk.

When a plastic bottle is put in the dishwasher, washed in hot water or heated in the microwave, the plastic starts to degrade and chemicals are released.  You can smell them and taste them, if you take the time.  Of course, once you become used to the taste and smell, it doesn't bother you.  That's one of the problems.

Truly eco friendly water bottles are made of glass or stainless steel.  If they are made of stainless steel, the liners do not contain chemicals and there are no plastic components to damage the purity of the liquids stored in them.

The stainless steel varieties are better for hiking and sports.  At home and to take to your workplace, reusable glass containers are a good choice.

Regardless of which type that you choose, you will be doing your part for the environment and you'll save money, too.  Just remember that there is really no such thing as plastic eco friendly water bottles.  It's just an advertising gimmick.
