Cut to 2006 and you will find the scenario even more exciting and promising with a plethora of path breaking researches. The current research trend involves an unmistakable partiality among both the physicians as well as the patients towards the natural alternatives for treating ED.

Various types of nutrients including herbs and vitamins provide the basic premise for these natural ED therapies. Let's examine how herbs can help you to treat erectile deficiency.

To begin from the scratch, let's explain the step by step process of the erection.

1. When a man receives a sexual stimulation, it is followed by a flow of Nitric oxide in the penis.

2. Nitric oxide is responsible for manufacturing an enzyme which in turn creates cGMP.

3. Now cGMP or cyclic guanosine monophosphate is an important metabolic factor that helps to relax the smooth penile muscles and allow the bloods to enter the chambers of the penis.

4. As the blood enters in it, the penis expands in size adding to its rigidity.

5. This ultimately results into an erection.

However, there is another enzyme called PDE5 that works right there to neutralize the function of enzyme creating the cGMP. Otherwise, it would have been resulted into a permanent erection—-a situation defined by height of embarrassment.

Now the logic behind the impotency drug is: you block this PDE5 enzyme and prevent it from sabotaging the actions of nitric oxide and in the absence of this enzyme there will be a continuous flow of nitric oxide to translate the sexual stimuli into an effective erection!

In a nutshell, you have to stop one enzyme to encourage the activity of the other. And this is how most of the ED drugs in the market function to bring back your sexual potency.

But the proponents of the natural therapies and experts on herbs seem to follow a different logic. They emphasize on the enhancing of the flow of nitric oxide instead of blocking of the enzyme PDE5.

The herbs therefore function on this logic of raising the levels of nitric oxide followed by sexual stimulation.

A number of researches and trials have successfully concluded that there are certain herbs that can achieve this goal effectively. Moreover these bio-active herbs help to restore the natural hormonal balances and also contribute to the enhanced male libido and prevent further male sexual dysfunction. Here follows brief description of some of these herbs:

A. Siberian ginseng
Siberian ginseng or Eleutherococcus senticosus) is a traditional favorite among the Chinese practitioners.
In Chinese tradition you will also come to find the use of lycium berries and lotus seeds that fight against sexual dysfunction by enhancing kidney and liver energy.

B. Ashwagandha
Known as "Indian Ginseng", Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a traditional aphrodisiac. This herb proves to be most effective for those patients for whom the ED is the result of anxiety.

C. Damiana
This herb has a Mexican origin and traditionally used in Mexico as a mild but sure-fire male aphrodisiac. This herb also helps the women with a problem for achieving orgasm.

E. Pygeum
This herb is to be found in the evergreen forests of central and southern Africa. This non toxic herb takes care of urinary problems and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to treat the ED symptoms.
